The Captain is responsible for the safety of the crew, ship, cargo, and the environment. DECK DEPARTMENT ![Group 960](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%20960.png) Mates LICENSED CREW --- Mates on board the vessel include the First, Second and Third Mate. They are the highest-ranking crew within the deck department and possess all of the certifications needed for deck operations. They are responsible for maintaining the ship’s navigation equipment, updating charts and passage plans, and maintaining the ship’s exterior. Mates are typically on a watch schedule of four hours on, and eight hours off. ![Group 1614](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%201614.png) Unlicensed Crew --- In some cases, unlicensed positions do require a specialized certificate. The Able Seaman or Wheelsman have passed the Bridge Watch Rating Certificate (BWR) and act as a helmsman or Lookout. They wheel the vessel and, during cargo operations, perform certain deck duties. Junior positions include Ordinary Seaman and they work under the supervision of the Mates. [APPLY NOW](https://www.algonet.com/careers/) ENGINE DEPARTMENT ![Group 1619](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%201619.png) Chief Engineer --- The Chief Engineer acts as the manager of the Engineering Department. The Chief Engineer or “Chief” is responsible for all equipment on board, as well as to ensure the safety of the crew and the environment within the department. ![Group 1629](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%201629.png) Engineers LICENSED CREW --- Engineers on board the vessel include Second, Third, and occasionally Fourth Engineers, each holding the certifications required for their respective roles. Engineers report to the Chief Engineer and are responsible for the everyday operation and maintenance of the engine room and are typically on an engine room watch of four hours on and eight hours off. ![Group 1637](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%201637.png) Unlicensed Crew --- Unlicensed crew are not necessarily “unlicensed” as some positions require a specialized certificate; however, these crew members have not taken officer training. Positions on board include Electrician, Head Tunnelman, Tunnelman and occasionally a Mobile Utility Employee or MUC. Responsibilities include electrical work, maintenance of engine room equipment and operation and maintenance of self-unloading machinery on vessels that have self-unloading capabilities. [APPLY NOW](https://www.algonet.com/careers/) GALLEY DEPARTMENT ![Group 1642](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%201642.png) Chief Cook --- The Chief Cook is responsible for all aspects of the galley, including food preparation and planning, ordering inventory, as well as the galley staff. ![Group 1648-1](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%201648-1.png) Second Cook --- The Second Cook reports to the Chief Cook and is responsible for assisting the Chief Cook with any galley functions. ![Group 1655](https://www.algomacentral.ca/hubfs/Group%201655.png) Cadets/ Students --- Engine and Deck Cadets are hired through their Marine College’s co-op program. This program provides future seafarers with valuable time to train on board a vessel to become a certified Mate or Engineer. Galley students are also occasionally on board to train with the Chief Cook to gather marine catering experience. ## Shoreside Careers Algoma's shoreside office provides support to our crews, customers, and fleet.
